Europe by the numbers (recap of 2019 summer trip)

Well.  That was fun.  And fast.

Our summer of fun has come to an end.  The summer continues for AJ for another two weeks, but Jan returns to work today.1

We had a couple of goals when we set out planning our Europen vacation.  First was to see as many of the Au Pairs that lived with us over the past decade.  Second was to show AJ where we used to live when we were stationed in Germany and show him some of our favorite places.  And lastly to find new places and see new things.

So how did we do?

Pretty darn well. Continue reading “Europe by the numbers (recap of 2019 summer trip)”

Attack of the Bridge Players and Reims (7/9/19)

We have had absolutely fantastic travel karma and now that I write that down, our trip will commence to come off the track. Continue reading “Attack of the Bridge Players and Reims (7/9/19)”

Life in the countryside of Germany with the Reif family (7/6/19-7/7/19)

For two days we spend time with Susanne and her family and check out the Rhine region.  Our original plan was to cruise up and down the Rhine looking at medieval towns and castles.  That plan changes after our first day and we end up spending more time on the Mosel and on the Reif farm.

(We move) From the mountains to the (Rhine) river (7/5/19-7/6/19)

We have a transition day ahead of us.  Our time in the Austrian Alps has come to an end and we will, over the next day and a half, move from South Central Germany/Austria to the western side of Germany on the Rhine River.  Today we have to drive back to Munich, drop off the rental car, do some laundry, then catch a 0730 train on Saturday to Frankfort Airport, transfer to a regional train and then onto Bacharach. Neuschwanstein, the Alps and I ROCK the hotel! (7/1/19)

It is time to get the hell out of Munich.  Not the city’s fault that a heat wave blasted the place, but we are ready to make like a tree and leave.

A different kind of birthday present (6/30/19)

It is Jan’s birthday today, and she is one year older.  I won’t tell you how many of those years she has under her belt, because I want to enjoy the rest of this trip and not spend a day in the hospital removing her flip flop from my a$$.  I tried to think outside of the box for what exactly to get her for her birthday; after all, she has both AJ and me in her life and what more could anyone ask for?  And we both already have too much stuff, so I figured I’d give her an experience instead of a thing.

So on her birthday, we went on a tour of Dachau. Continue reading “A different kind of birthday present (6/30/19)”

Onward to Munich and a return to the heat! (6/29/19)

We are bringing back both the tool of the day AND quote of the day AND (as an added bonus), the tool o the day.

The tool of the day?  Earplugs.

The quote of the day comes from Jan:  “I hate Rick Steves.”
Let me get you caught up. Continue reading “Onward to Munich and a return to the heat! (6/29/19)”

Dodging bikers in Berlin (6/27/19-6/28/19)

Two questions:

1.  Would our two hour nap impact our night of sleep, or would we be up all night in jet-lag hell.

2.  Would we remember any of the German we had learned while we were stationed here 15 years ago.

The answers are ‘no’ and ‘hell no!’

Our next trip begins!  (Twice delayed) (6/25/19)

Before we begin, a special shout out to Shannon from M/V Darwin who is a travel agent, does it for a living, and appears to enjoy it.  I have been playing travel agent for the past two months, arranging our trip to Europe and it suuuuuuucccccckkkkkssss.  Like big time.  And I fully expect that because of my inexperience, our trip will be filled with missed connections, lost tickets and other calamities due solely to my incompetence as a pretend travel agent.  Which is why it was no surprise that at 0610 on June 25th, I got a phone call from Amtrak telling us our train to Philly had been cancelled and would I please call so that they could arrange alternate trains for us.

This is going to be great.
